Characters in Game: N/A
Character Name: Kanaya Maryam
Canon: MSPA: Homestuck
Age: Probably a touch over fourteen years old, counting her time previously in a game.
Previous Game History: Kanaya arrived in Cair Paradisa around February immediately after her death at the hands of Eridan. She arrived highly upset and in a panic; fortunately, she had several concerned canonmates on hand to greet her, most notably Karkat, her good friend, who immediately rushed to her room to see that she was all right. With the support of her friends old and new, Kanaya settled into Paradisa rather quickly. In fact, she'd left such dismal circumstances behind in the Veil that Paradisa was more of a reprieve than any kind of punishment. The matriorb, the seed of the new troll race, had been destroyed, and Kanaya had seen someone she'd thought was a friend turn on her and the rest of the remaining trolls. She didn't feel like she had much to go back to in her own world.
Vriska, her former crush, arrived and disrupted some of the predictable routine Kanaya was settling into; Kanaya had been treating the other girl with a cold shoulder since Vriska had seemed to bestow her favors on someone else. Though things were tense between the two of them, with all the space Paradisa had to offer it was easy enough to maintain her distance from Vriska, and Paradisa seemed like something of a boon until children started disappearing at the hands of a mysterious kidnapper. Kanaya was spirited away with many other children, amongst them several of her friends from home, to a dismal world set apart from the beautiful castle she'd been in formerly. Children arriving later revealed that kids were being kidnapped by a being known as the "Slenderman," who would have to be driven off through combat or appeased with a sacrifice if the children were to come back safely. Of course, it wasn't enough to simply be menaced by this terrifying figure; there had to be relationship drama going on in the gloomy woods that were Slenderman's domain.
Vriska and Karkat were both there as well - Vriska, Kanaya's former moirail: that is, a type of asexual romantic relationship where Kanaya served as a mitigating influence to Vriska's violent and destructive tendencies. Kanaya was actually flushed for Vriska for part of their moirallegiance: that is, Kanaya wanted to enter a sexual romantic relationship with Vriska, in more human terms 'shit lets be girlfriends.' While in the woods, under pressure, Kanaya and Karkat joined up in a moirallegiance, which only increased tensions with Vriska, who was confused at what Kanaya's deal was anyway and maybe... a little hurt and jealous?
Romantic drama or no, things with Slenderman came to a head shortly and the children had to flee through the woods, pursued by the monster. In the meantime, other residents had managed to reach the isolated world where Slenderman was keeping his prisoners, and actually attacked him, allowing the children their chance to escape. Everyone came out somewhat traumatized but okay from the incident, and other than her new moirallegiance with Karkat, Kanaya wasn't injured unduly by events. Trolls are tough creatures and she's no exception.
Of course more trolls were joining them throughout and Kanaya found a new flushed crush, while still dealing with the big Vriska question: her formerly-dead friend Aradia had arrived in Paradisa, now alive again, with a new forcefully positive attitude and a level-up in badass. Kanaya found herself nursing a bit of romantic crush on Aradia, though she didn't act on it due to the fact that Aradia was herself already entangled with two other trolls.
Life in Paradisa was never as upset after Slenderman as it had been while he was grabbing children, and Kanaya was able to settle in again with only minor interruptions such as silly pranks by the castle. One other disruption, however, was the arrival of her killer: Eridan Ampora. Kanaya was hardly thrilled to see him in the castle, as he'd shot her through the middle and though Vriska said she came back as basically a troll vampire, Kanaya was hurt by the betrayal and crushed by the destruction of the matriorb (which would have allowed the trolls a new beginning as a race). Kanaya warned her friends of Eridan's presence and murderous impulses but allowed him some leeway as he'd arrived before killing anyone, from his perspective, and she hoped that he could be led in another direction.
As for the rest of her time in Paradisa, Kanaya spent time nosing into the business of her friends, making new friends, constructing a garden, supporting Karkat, and untangling things with Vriska. She also sewed some sharp outfits for the trolls who were arriving and enjoyed time and space to carry out her numerous hobbies. Circumstances with Vriska began to improve, Eridan went home, and everything seemed to be going well - then Karkat left Paradisa, and Kanaya was gone soon after, leaving behind some nice new clothes for her friends and a freshly started garden.
Appearance: See her icons. Otherwise: a charming young troll girl! Roughly humanoid in form, but with dark grey skin, black lips, fangs, black hair, and two horns which begin a dark orange at the bases shading to a deep yellow at the tips. Kanaya's horns mimic the Virgo symbol in that one arcs smoothly up while the other has a hook at the tip. Two fangs protrude over her lower lip in a vampiric fashion. Her hair is worn short, in a cute and eternally stylish bob.
History: MSPA Wiki. This canon is nothing if not a clusterfuck, so if further clarification is required, I'll be happy to give it!
Personality: Kanaya is a bit of an odd duck amongst her culture and general, and amongst her friends. An inquisitive, intelligent and creative young woman, she's a rarity in both her social standing (determined by her blood color - trolls judge caste rank by the 'hemospectrum', with blood colors normally ranging from dark red to fuchsia) and in her interests. For one, Kanaya has jade green blood, a variant that places her in the middle of the social ranking in spite of the fact that jade-bloods are born so rarely that there has not been a single other incident of a jade-blood surviving to adulthood in all the hallowed annals of Alternian (troll) history. Of which there are thousands of years of records.
Her unique blood color provides her with several characteristics not possessed by other trolls, which have a pervasive influence over her life. For one thing, Kanaya can venture out under the Alternian sun, while most trolls are forced to be nocturnal, as they find the sun's glare to be harsh and hostile, impossible to live in. Alone amongst her peers Kanaya can traverse the daytime hours with ease, armed with her trusty chainsaw (which doubles as a tube of lipstick!) and protected by her lusus (a lusus is a usually formidable Alternian monster, which will protect and nurture a young troll as it grows into adulthood). With her ability to traverse the daylight and her taste for bright colors and aesthetics (another rarity in troll culture - trolls think fashion is "stupid"), she's also an avid gardener and fashionista. She also enjoys reading stories about "rainbow drinkers", that is, undead trolls that stalk the daytime, drinking the blood of other trolls. IE, Alternian vampires. As such, she's an example of what Alternian society considers to be a "goth".
In a race generally made up of assholes, Kanaya is actually quite a kind girl. She often acts as a mediatior to her friends, smoothing over disputes and keeping an eye on the more dangerous people in her social circle. Troll romance is divided into four quadrants, only one of which we humans would recognize as healthy romantic love; two quadrants involve reproductive relationships, while the remaining two are what we would consider to be platonic. In Alternian society, finding viable sexual-romantic partners is a pressing concern, as those who can't provide genetic material will be culled; Kanaya is in sort of a tight spot in this regard, as she has consistent problems with being friendzoned even when she doesn't want to be. She has a romantic crush on the troll Vriska, with whom she is engaged in one of the "pale" platonic relationships - they are moirails, or in other words, two trolls that make each other more functional in society. Vriska doesn't seem to return her feelings, although Kanaya does care about her deeply enough to suffer when Vriska doesn't notice the reality of Kanaya's feelings. This brings us to another point about Kanaya, though: she is to some degree coded as a lesbian, and though she's only about thirteen in human years she has a tendency to get little girl-crushes on female friends that she admires or covets.
Amongst her other friends, Kanaya is known as a meddler and a fusser, though she would only claim to have the best of intentions. Honestly, her intentions really are to the good, and she does want her friends to do well; however, there's an element of expedience in Kanaya too, not surprising considering the general character of her race. When her lusus dies, Kanaya quite calmly marks a lipstick line down her mother figures' side and then chainsaws her open to obtain the matriorb (an egg, in more common parlance, from which a mother grub - the organism that ensures the reproduction of the troll race - will hatch. Not all lusii have this organ; Kanaya's lusii is a virgin mother grub, who abdicated from breeding to raise her). Likewise, when her friend Tavros (who is paralyzed from the waist down) is taking a nap on the floor, Kanaya comes up and chainsaws his legs off so that they can be replaced with robotic prosthetics.
Even with her own personal drama going on, though, Kanaya is also a level and giving friend. She serves as an anchor and a soothing influence, a figure capable of giving swift slaps upside the head to get someone back on track as much as she is of being kind and in some ways quite motherly. She mediates, she smooths things over, she nurtures her friends and wants to see them rise to their greatest potential and be happy - but she's also a girl who's just learning about sarcasm, who can chainsaw a buddy when it's required, who's fought her way through a really brutal game. She made mistakes, failed at some things, was killed by the weapon she'd forged and given as a gift to her murderer. It's not as if her meddling doesn't come back to bite her, but she tries to do right by people. It's just as they say, though: the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
As for her time in Paradisa, Kanaya didn't go through enough earthshattering events to actually change so very much. She's still a caring meddler, and if there are any changes, it's in the orientation of her relationships and Kanaya's settling into a sort of quiet disillusionment with herself. The thing is, every goal that Kanaya really wanted to see carried out has failed: she allowed the matriorb to be destroyed, she couldn't protect her friends, she couldn't get any of what she wanted, etc. etc. So, though she's still helpful and caring, Kanaya also doesn't see much of a future for herself at home. Though Vriska told her she would return to life (or undeath, as the case may be) it's hard for her to imagine that.
Kanaya was fairly happy in Paradisa, the happiest she'd been in a while. She felt like she could actually influence the course of events for her friends there, or at least be a support and a help to them, even as she remembered her great failure at home. In a way, though she knew that no one would be in Paradisa forever, she turned her back on her home and tried to ignore what was going on there. Though a caring girl, Kanaya isn't the best at dealing with her feelings and she didn't really get any better at that - she just held them off.
She would've been content to stay in Paradisa a lot longer anyway, but she doesn't really get a choice about that. Still, she will do her best to adapt to yet another change, and, well... a chance to travel isn't so bad either.
Abilities/Skills: Kanaya's jade blood is a mutation which, as previously stated, allows her to traverse the daylight hours under Alternia's harsh sun with impunity. Other than that, she is stronger and more durable than she looks: Kanaya grew up fighting zombies with her chainsaw, and trolls in general are a violent race where children have to be tough to survive. Kanaya is strong and intelligent, and seemingly quick on her feet.
She also seems to be an accomplished designer/seamstress. She probably makes the fancier clothes she's seen wearing around and could certainly manage to take care of regular mending for any friends she made!
Other than that, Kanaya's Sburb title is the "Sylph of Space" which implies she does have a certain relationship with space that allows her to do some unnatural and irregular things with it, although we never actually see her doing much with these abilities in canon. The other Space player, Jade Harley, doesn't do anything too wild before she ascends to god tier either, and Kanaya is not god tier.
A Sylph is a creature of its element, associated in mythology with the air; Space players (once they hit god tier) seemingly have the ability to transform themselves into gateways which open into other places, and through which items and people can be transported. They can shrink and expand objects as well as speed them down or slow them up, probably amongst other powers as well. However, Kanaya is not god tier; however however, other players are shown as having some relationship with their elements before they ascend to god tier (see Rose Lalonde and Dave Strider). I don't want to extrapolate too much but assigning some relationship with Kanaya and her element probably makes sense, going from this example. However, I don't want to overpower her either, so in the context of the game, what seems to make sense for her element and aspect is a kind of limited teleportation: Kanaya could be able to move herself effortlessly and easily through space, though she cannot teleport other objects or people or do Jade's fancier things. If this isn't kosher, mere extrapolation as it is, I'm down with it being nixed. Please let me know.
Belongings: A black long-sleeved t-shirt worn under a black t-shirt with the Virgo symbol printed on it in jade green. A red skirt, partly scalloped, and slip-on shoes. Her lipstick, which can transform into a chainsaw. This will do, I think.

3rd Person Prose Sample: In the Veil for the first time since the game had begun Kanaya found herself with the spare time to be terribly homesick. While she and her friends were playing Sgrub, there had been no time to be homesick; there had barely been time to be anything except worried about the progression of the game or fretting over Vriska or any of her other friends most in dire straits at the moment or exalting at some victory which seemed very great at the moment, or stoking volcanoes or catching frogs or breeding new universes or listening to Karkat fuss. There had been a great deal to be doing was the point and now there was hardly anything, and everyone seemed to bottom out very suddenly. Eridan was in a snit, Karkat was storming this way and that gnashing his teeth in a black temper, the less said of Vriska the better.
It was the dumps, Kanaya thought. It was not a familiar thought exactly. She had never had time for the dumps at home either, there were always outfits to be making or topiaries to be shaving into one shape or another, plants to tend to, and of course her lusus. She would have felt much gratitude for her lusus' presence. As it was Kanaya found herself feeling like she was sitting on her hands. They were slated to die and there were aliens to become acquainted with but she couldn't quite bring herself to be still. Karkat snarled absently at her when Kanaya told him she was taking a walk, he would fuss at her and get everyone else up in a froth if the proper respects weren't paid to him as leader. The halls outside the lab were cool and dim like Alternian dusk, though nothing else felt right about them, the smell was all wrong and there were none of the sounds. Kanaya had been only part-diurnal on Alternia, as she didn't want to miss her friends but she couldn't while away all the day abed either, with her plants to tend.
It seemed they were all fomenting a little, flushed passions and caliginous sloshing dangerously together. It wasn't beneficial for twelve young trolls to all be cooped up together, and she would do better to be back with her friends smoothing out differences, but Kanaya felt a little worn out at the very thought.
She reached the room of the crossroads and rather than transportalizing anywhere she sat down at the edge of the circle that belonged to her, with the green symbol of her caste floating above it, and sat at the edge with her feet out and her chin in her hands studying the room. It seemed so peaceful and was quite aesthetically pleasing if she said so herself! Here were all the colors of the hemospectrum, plus Karkat's anonymous grey, arrayed in a circle where together they really did a fine job covering the whole rainbow. It seemed they were destined to be more harmonious to the eye than in actuality.
The thought brought her friends back to her mind: she could hear Terezi's cackle and Vriska's sawing laugh in turn, see Eridan flashing his fangs at Sollux while the other boy did worse than not responding in kind by ignoring all of it. It needed her for quelling and Kanaya took another moment to rest her chin in her hands and close her eyes before she got to a feet and walked back towards her responsibilities again, with a sigh.
